Appoggia su quattro piedini spessi di silicone morbido per evitare vibrazioni, e le due ventole retrostanti (che rimangono accese continuamente) sono così silenziose che anche tenendolo di fianco al computer (vedi foto) non sono percepibili. I carrelli per i dischi anche loro hanno inserti in gomma e spugna dove appoggiano i dischi, anche qui per annullare le vibrazioni. I carrelli sono compatibili sia con i 3.5'' che 2.5''.La dotazione è ricca: vengono forniti (oltre all'alimentatore) due set di viti, uno per 5 dischi da 3.5'' e uno per 5 dischi da 2.5'', un cacciavite dedicato, un kit di cacciavitino e spillo di reset per il selettore RAID, 10 etichettine per i dischi da attaccare sui coperchi dei carrelli, e una scorta di due piedini di silicone e due smorzatori di gomma per il montaggio dei dischi.Le cinque baie sono hot-swap: ogni disco viene riconosciuto come un dispositivo indipendente dalla rimozione sicura hardware di Windows, quindi si può connettere, smontare e sostituire uno o più dischi senza spegnere la stazione e senza interferire con la continuità operativa degli altri dischi.Estremamente semplice la selezione del RAID per le baie 1 e 2.Tutte le baie sembrano operare alla stessa velocità: ho testato con un SSD capace di 440Mb/s (il Crucial che si vede in foto, il disco più veloce che avevo sotto mano) e CrystalDiskMark. Il disco testato raggiuinge sempre la sua velocità massima (la stessa che vedo quando è connesso alla porta SATA sulla motherboard del computer) su tutte e cinque le baie. Attenzione: se fate i test di velocità connettetevi via usb3 e avendo cura di scegliere una porta del vostro computer che sulla motherboard sia molto vicina al processore (il mio computer per esempio ha anche alcune porte lontane che sebbene abbiano il dentino blu vanno a circa 4Mb/s).Una sola cosa a cui prestare attenzione: evitate di cambiare le lettere delle unità assegnate automaticamente dal dispositivo. Io ci ho provato ma dopo un riavvio l'impostazione è stata dimenticata, causandomi qualche problema di continuità di servizio con i programmi che operavano sui. Da lì in poi ho sempre lasciato le lettere di default e non ho più avuto problemi.Seguiranno aggiornamenti per l'affidabilità a pieno carico a lungo termine.

Having used several brands and configurations of RAID enclosure over the years, TerraMaster stand out for the ease of assembly and reliability once in service. This enclosure is RAID 5 only and needs no switches (other than for power) to aid set-up; there is a similar enclosure that offers RAID 0 or 1 on the first two bays with the other three as individual drives, e. F, G & H and which can thus be of whatever capacity suits a specific need. The enclosure will support 14 TB drive units (possibly also 16 TB).Assembly is not tool-free and requires use of a supplied screwdriver and sets of screws, one for 3.5-inch units and another for 2.5-inc HDDs and SSDs. With unpacked drives, assembly needs no more than 10-15 minutes, a few more if they need to be unpacked.In this instance, an existing RAID set-up was transferred from a problematic enclosure (a now discontinued brand and one of the oldest owned) to this and it was immediately recognised and accepted. That was not the experience with smaller TerraMaster enclosures where the RAID set-up had to be redone from scratch (after backing-up, of course).There are few current options for 5-bay enclosures and this is the last known. While reliable and easy to assemble, it is unfortunately not inexpensive but the quality and reliability make it worth its price.POSTSCRIPT @ 11/2020TerraMaster's RAID Manager software was once available, then not found on their website for a year or more, but is now available once again. It is intended to provide alternative RAID configurations which may be available only if a lesser number of drive units (at least 2) are installed or when others of their enclosures are used; some enclosures can be configured via hardware. but not the D5-300. It has other functions, too, and can be compared with the older JMRaid Manager and the more recent and nearly identical Orico version although with a more basic (non-graphic) user interface.

Ho acquistato questo case per utilizzare due dischi tradizionali in modalità RAID 0 con un iMac 27" - 2017, al fine di avere una grande capacità ed una discreta velocità di lettura/scrittura, senza spendere le cifre ancora elevate richieste dagli SSD.L'utilizzo è prevalentemente come libreria di file video, originali ed ottimizzati, da lavorare con FCPX, e come memoria virtuale per Photoshop.La scelta è ricaduta su questo case dopo averne provato uno di un'altra marca che, però, aveva problemi di disconnessione "spontanea" dal computer e che ho dovuto restituire.Ho "beccato" una delle offerte periodiche a 135 Euro, cifra che, secondo me, rappresenta l'ottimale rapporto qualità/prezzo di questo oggetto.La spedizione è stata rapidissima; il case arriva, ben protetto, in una scatola contenente il case stesso, un cavetto USB-Type C > USB 3.0 della lunghezza di circa un metro, due sacchettini di viti per l'installazione degli HDD (un sacchettino per gli HDD 3.5" ed uno per gli HDD o gli SSD da 2.5"), due cacciaviti (uno grande a croce ed uno piccolo a taglio, per ruotare lo switch), un alimentatore con adattatore per presa Europea e inglese, una scheda con diverse FAQ, un set di etichette per catalogare gli HDD ed uno strumentino, del tutto simile a quello per le schede SIM dei telefoni Apple, utile per premere il tasto "reset" e cambiare modalità RAID.L'aspetto esteriore restituisce una sensazione di qualità elevata: è quasi tutto alluminio, con finitura satinata molto compatibile con l'estetica dei computer Mac.Sulla parte frontale sono presenti un pulsante di accensione e spegnimento, con relativo LED, i due LED per gli HDD interni che segnalano la presenza (LED fisso) ed il funzionamento (LED lampeggiante) dei drives ed i due contenitori scorrevoli per gli HDD.Nella parte posteriore è presente una ventola termocontrollata, molto silenziosa, uno switch rotante a 4 posizioni per selezionare la modalità scelta tra le 4 disponibili (RAID 0, RAID 1, JBOD o normale), il tasto di reset, una presa USB 3.1 Gen. 2 (Type C) e la presa di alimentazione.Appena inseriti gli HDD, nel mio caso due Seagate Barracuda da 3TB l'uno, questi vengono immediatamente individuati ma è necessaria l'inizializzazione perchè vengano visti come HDD atttivi dal Mac.L'inizializzazione dura una manciata di secondi.Personalmente, ho preferito sostituire il cavo USB originale con un cavo che avesse connettori Type-C su entrambi i lati, per essere certo di sfruttare al 100% la velocità consentita da questa connessione.Ho quindi testato i dischi in funzionamento singolo, con BlackMagic Disc Speed Test, ed i risultati sono stati ottimi ma stranamente diversi tra loro: dopo numerose prove, uno dei due dischi ha semrpre raggiunto le velocità tipiche indicate dal produttore (185-190MB/Sec), mentre l'altro ha raggiunto i 210-215MB/Sec, sia in lettura che in scrittura.In ogni caso, il case non rallenta in alcun modo la velocità dei dischi inseriti al suo interno.Con gli HDD inizializzati e con il case acceso, si seleziona poi la modalità scelta tra le 4 disponibili, si preme per almeno 5 secondi il tasto reset ed il gioco è fatto.A questo punto, nel caso si scelga una modalità RAID o JBOD, il Mac richiederà una nuova inizializzazione dell'unità.Dopo aver terminato la seconda inizializzazione dell'unità in RAID 0 (6TB totali), ho nuovamente effettuato dei test di velocità, sempre con BlackMagic Disc Speed Test, ed il risultato è stato di 355-365MB/Sec in scrittura-lettura, davvero notevole!Ho quindi riversato sul disco oltre 2TB di foto, video e dati vari, ma non è indicativo riportare il tempo impiegato per tale operazione, in quanto la velocità di scrittura del case è stata limitata da quella di lettura del disco interno del Mac.La temperatura del case, dopo un paio d'ore di funzionamento in scrittura continua, non era variata minimamente, il case non era nemmeno tiepido!Ho poi effettuato numerosi test, accendendo e spegnendo il Mac, lasciandolo spento per diversi minuti con il case acceso, attivando e disattivando la modalità STOP, lasciando inattivo il tutto per molto tempo e l'unità è sempre stata vista dal Mac alla sua riaccensione, cosa che non succedeva con l'altro case.Addirittura, dopo alcuni minuti di inutilizzo, i dischi si disattivano automaticamente, per poi riattivarsi immediatamente non appena si "chiedano" dati presenti sull'unità stessa o si riaccenda il Mac, ma non so se questa sia una caratteristica del case o degli stessi dischi!Sono soddisfattissimo del mio acquisto anche se non posso fare a meno di notare l'inutile economia fatta da TerraMaster nel fornire un cavo USB 3.1 > USB 3.0 e non un cavo Type-C su entrambi i lati; io l'ho dovuto acquistare separatemente al costo di 16 Euro e, in un prodotto di questo livello, questa mancanza dovrebbe far meritare una stella in meno, ma questo oggetto è talmente perfetto, bello e veloce nel suo funzionamento che, personalmente, non me la sento di dare 4 stelle solo per questa ragione.Un altro aspetto che potraebbe lasciare perplessi è costituito dalla necessità di assicurare i dischi ai propri supporti con le viti, contrariamente ad altri case che prevedono l'inserimento e l'estrazione rapida dei dischi, senza necessità di viti, ma questo è giustificato dal fatto che il case è compatibile con tutti i formati di drives, compatibilità non presente nei case con sistema ad estrazione rapida.Anche l'assistenza, per ora e per quel poco che ho potuto testare, posso dire che è SUPERLATIVA: hanno sempre risposto in modo esauriente e rapido alle mie numerose domande.Consiglio l'acquisto a chiunque sia alla ricerca di un case di ottima qualità, ad un buon prezzo (se non avete fretta, però, aspettate le periodiche offerte a tempo da 135 Euro!), assolutamente compatibile con iMac, sia esteticamente che nel funzionamento e dalle ottime prestazioni!

This review relates to a D2-310 enclosure purchased three weeks ago to act as direct attached storage to a recent MacBook Pro. My needs were to provide a reliable backup/bulk storage solution for the MacBook. As this unite is ‘direct attached’ storage, it appears on the computer as extra disk drives and is only directly accessible to the system that it is cabled to (of course you can use the sharing facilities of that computer to access the storage from elsewhere but this between you and your computer). I’m using the enclosure in RAID-1 moored disk mode with s pair of Seagate IronWolf 6TB drives.Right from the outset it is clear that Terra-Master put a lot of thought into the construction of the unit, the included items, and the packaging.The D2-310 is a two bay direct attached storage enclosure. You need to purchase the disks separately according to your requirements. It can be configured to present the two physical drives individually to the computer, Combine their capacity into one drive - Raid 0 (higher performance but lower reliability than the physical disks) or Mirrored - Raid 1 (Higher reliability as if either physical drive fails you can replace it while the other continues to provide service and preserve your data,).Configuration of the enclosure is very simple and basically involves fitting the drives, selecting the mode of operation (Raid 1, Raid 0, or individual drives) on a small rotary switch, and pressing a recessed reset switch to activate the change. You then need to use the normal disk preparation utilities of your computer to prepare the new space. There is no specific software to accompany the drive - it isn’t required. Getting started instructions are included and prominent stickers on the unit itself provide guidance.The construction of the unit is very solid. The main body is very solid aluminium. There front and rear panels are silver plastic (which unusually for silver plastic are very presentable). The front panel has indicator lights for the two drive, a power light and a on off button (the operation of which is very solid). The rear panel includes the USB-C connector, a DC input for the included external laptop power adapter, the rotary mode switch and the reset button. Also on the rear panel is the fan. The Fan is very quiet in operation. The drive caddies are also silver plastic. In contradiction to the feel of the rest of there unit, they feel a little flimsy when out of the enclosure but are well sufficient for the job. On closer inspection nice touches to the caddied include labelling of the individual caddies as HDD1 and HDD2 to ensure that if they are removed, you know the order in which to re-insert them. Additionally the caddies runners are sprung to ensure that they locate properly.The performance of the unit is very good. There is no evidence that there is any additional cache storage on the unit or protection from drive corruption in the event of sudden power loss, but then again this is a basic enclosure.As hinted above, I considered that Terra-Master put a lot of thought into the presentation of the unit. The package includes plenty of screws to mount various typed of hard disk This includes including the two screwdrivers that you need to provision the unit - one for the hard disk screws, and a tiny one to adjust the mode switch. In addition there is a proper tool to press the recessed reset switch (similar to a mobile phone sim eject tool - no need to unfold a paper clip!). The included USB cable is USB-C (enclosure end) to USB A (computer end) If your computer has a USB-C connector then you will need to buy an additional cable (I bought an Amazon basics USB-C to USB-C cable which seems OK)Should it be necessary to replace a failed hard drive when using RAID 1 (mirrored drives), the unit will automatically rebuild your data onto the new drive, however it is important to leave the enclosure powered up AND the attached computer (also powered up) until the build is complete. That is a little unusual, but hopefully you will not need to do that very often.It is worth consulting the list of recommended drives on the Terra-Master website before selecting drives. There is obviously a trade off between reliability, price, speed, and noise. I went for speed/reliability over cost/noise. Your priorities might be different.All in all I’m very satisfied with the unit. Plus points - Solid construction/complete kit; Minus points - difficult to find any.

Diese Rezension bezieht sich auf das Modell D5-300C.Ich habe eine längere Geschichte bezüglich externer Festplattengehäuse hinter mir. Zunächst war es irgendwann eine Phallanx von Einzelgehäusen mit jeweils eigenem Netzteil. Ein völlig natürlicher Vorgang, dass ein Gehäuse zum anderen kommt. Das kennt wohl jeder. Auf der Suche nach einem Gehuause für 2-4 3.5" Festplatten war die Vorgabe eigentlich ganz einfach: Alle 4-5 Platten müssen einzeln in einem Single oder (je nach Definition des Herstellers) als JBOD Konfiguration laufen, da ich aus Gründen der besseren Kontrollierbarkeit ausschliesslich Software-RAID einsetze.Soviel Angebot gab es dann tatsächlich nicht, und ich hatte sie alle: die IcyBoxes, die Fantechs, die Sharkoons und sogar ein 19" 4-fach-Gehäuse von Sonnet. Alle hatten Ihre Schwächen, sei es die Verarbeitungsqualität, der Stromverbrauch, oder die Lautstärke. Nachdem ich mich von dem letzten Gehäuse (das besagte 19" Gerät von Sonnet) aus Gründen des Stromverbrauchs und der Lautstärke getrennt habe, ging die Suche weiter. Fast vor dem Aufgeben fand ich vor etwa 6 Monaten brandneu eine Reihe von Gehäusen der mir bislang unbekannten Firma Terramaster. Im Angebot auch das Modell D5-300C, das teichnishc meine Anforderungen erfüllt hat und optisch, sowie der Verarbeitungsqualität eingies versprach. Der Preis ging in Ordnung, weil wir die ordungsgemässe und vertrauenserweckende Unterbringung meiner Daten schon etwas Wert ist und es nach meinen bisherigen Erfahrung in der Region um die 100€ ohnehin kein taugliches Gehäuse mit meinen technischen Anforderungen gab.Also habe ich das Gehäuse bestellt und das Beste gehofft.Der Inhalt es Paketes hat mich dann sehr positiv überrascht: Das Gehäuse macht einen schön-stabilen Eindruck. Kein Vergleich zu dem klapprigen Konkurrenzprodukten. Das Netz- und USB-Kabel wird von hinten eingesteckt und die Verbindung des Netzsteckers im Gehäuse ist ausreichend haltbar. Ich hebe das so deutlich hervor, da billigere Konkurrenzprodukte in der Hinsicht nicht gerade geglänzt und den Netzteil-Anschluss seitlich verbaut haben. Dieser war dann auch noch recht wackelig in der Ausführung, so dass man beim gelegentlichen Hantieren mit anderen Kabeln (bei mir spielt sich alles in einem niedrigen 19" Schrank mit Router, Switch, etc. ab) schonmal ganz schnell das Netzkabel rausgezogen hat. Will man 2 Gehäuse nebeneinander stellen, entspricht das Endresultat aufgrund der seitlichen Anordung des Netzteilanschlusses wohl auch nicht jedermanns/-fraus ästhetischen Ansprüchen. Das Netzteil ist bei diesem Gehäuse übrigens nicht integriert. Mich stört es bei meinen Server-Schrank-Setup rein gar nicht.Das Gehäuse ging dann an einem Mac Mini im Software-RAID 1 mit jeweils 2 Platten und einer extra Platte in Betrieb und hat 5 Monate absolut problemlos seinen Dienst verrichtet. Nach dieser Zeit gab es die ersten Probleme in der Form, dass das Betriebssystem urplötzlich einen der RAID-Verbunde verloren hat, da eine Platte den Kontakt zum Rechner verloren hat. (ich kann das auch deutlich technischer ausdrücken. Das wäre allerdings im Rahmen dieser Rezension wenig zielführend und nicht jeder Leser kann oder will sich mit solchen Details rumschlagen). Fakt ist: das RAID ist sozusagen periodisch tweilweise auseinandergefallen.Nach 5 Monaten kann man wohl noch den Hersteller wegen eines möglichen Defekts kontaktieren, dachte ich mir. Allerdings nicht ohne sachdienliche Hinweise. Nach sehr aufwendigen systematischen Tests hat sich gezeigt, dass der Slot 2 des Gehäuses offenbar ein grösseres Problem bekommen hat. Mit dieser Information bin ich an den Support von Terramaster herangetreten. Da die Email-Adresse einen deutschsprachigen Ansprechpartner suggeriert hat, habe ich also auf Deutsch Kontakt aufgenommen. Die gesamte folgende Geschichte war fuur mich mindestens bemerkenswert: Es meldete sich eine Dame names Claire auf Englisch. Also nochmal alles auf Englisch erklärt. Claire war sofort sehr offen für das Problem, hat einige Fragen gestellt und ich habe weitere Informationen geliefert. Die schnelle Hilfe habe ich nicht bekommen, weil Claire vermutlich keine Technikerin ist. Nach etwas googlen stellte sich heraus, dass Claire nicht nur die Supporterin, sondern auch die Pressesprecherin des Noontech-Ablegers namens Terramaster ist. Claire hat allerdings ganz deutlich vermittelt, dass ihr Kundenzufriedenheit sehr wichtig ist. Das ist an der Support-Front für mich tatsächlich eher eine sehr seltene Erfahrung. Der Nachweis, dass offenbar ein Defekt an dem Gehäuse vorliegt, und es kein Problem meines Rechners oder der verbauten Festplatten ist habe ich erbracht, indem ich waghalsig einfach das gleiche Exemplar nochmal bestellt habe. Das Versprechen von Claire war ganz deutlich: wenn es am Gehäuse liegt, bekomme ich den Kaufpreis des ursprünglichen Gehäuses erstattet (mittlerweile ist das Gehäuse schon ein paar Euros preiswerter geworden). Das Versprechen wurde gehalten, und das Austauschgehäuse funktioniert nun tadellos an einem Linux im Software RAID-5 Verbund mit 5x WD-RED Platten.Zur Lautstärke: Der übliche Heimbenutzer wird das Gehäuse vermutlich nicht im Keller stehen haben, sondern womöglich im Arbeitszimmer direkt am oder der umittelbaren Nähe des Arbeitsplatzes. Ob es dort aufgrund der Lautstärke stört, hängt natürlich von dem eigenen Hörempfinden ab. Bei mir steht das Gehäuse im Keller in einem 19"-Schrank. Zu Debugging-Zwecken hatte ich es allerdings auch 1 Woche direkt neben mir auf dem Schreibtisch stehen. Die beiden Lüfter laufen relativ ruhig und haben mich kaum gestört. Daher ist die Lautstärke der eingebauten Festplatten ist in diesem Fall tatsächlich viel entscheidener. Hier muss ich sagen, dass meine 5 WD-RED Platten zwar als relativ leise gelten, aber im RAID-5 Verbund bei Schreib-/-lesezuriffen schon als recht störend empfunden werden könnten. Daher meine generelle Empfehlung, das Gehäuse eher nicht direkt auf dem Schreibtisch zu stellen. Das Gehäuse hat keinerlei lärmdämmenden Eigenschaften, allerdings ist mir das auch bei anderen Gehäusen noch nicht untergekommen.Qalität: es ist hier öfters Kritik an den angeblich leicht klapprigen Festplattenhalterungen zu lesen. Ich kann diese nicht wirklich nachvollziehen. Ja, sie sind aus Kunststoff und sicher haben die Halterungen minimales Spiel in Ihrer Führung, aber ganz klar ohne zu funktionalen Problemen zu führen. Wer seine Festplatten täglich rausrupft wird vermutlich tatsächlich irgendwann an die Grenzen der Haltbarkeit stossen. Dann ist ein industry-grade Gehäuse vermutlich die bessere Alternative. Kostet dann halt auch in etwa das 10-fache und macht richtig Lärm.FazitOK, das Gehäuse hat erstmalig versagt, und es wird sich zeigen, ob das Austausch-Exmplar nach ein paar Monaten eventuell auch wieder Ärger macht. Ich bin sehr zuversichtlich, dass das nicht passiert, weil es sonst keinerlei Berichte oder weitere Hinweise auf einen systematischen Fehler gibt und ich eher auf ein Montagsmodell tippe. Warum 5 Sterne, obwohl es bis hierhin nicht ganz stressfrei war? Weil das Gehäuse für mich immer noch komplett alternativlos ist, und mich auch aufgrund des wirklich vorbildlichen und fairen Supports voll überzeugt hat!Nachtrag:Fast ein Jahr später weiterhin keinerlei Probleme mit dem Gehäuse.

I have been using the TerraMaster D5-300 for the last month, and it has performed well! I have it running as part of a media server nearly 24/7, and there have been no issues so far. The USB C to A cable works great; it's nice to have a smaller cable than the traditional USB set up. The fans are also relatively quiet and seem to keep the enclosure pretty cool. The build quality feels really solid, and the caddy system works great with 3.5" drives. I wish it were tool-less, but the several screws only take a minute or so to install for each drive. It's nice to know the drives are secure, even though it isn't quite as easy as a tool-less set up. I personally haven't used the RAID function, so I can't comment on it. I still get just over 160MB/s without RAID on each of the HGST Deskstar drives I have in the enclosure.I will update this review with any changes, should something arise, but so far I really like the product and would recommend it to anyone looking for a great multi-bay Direct Attached Storage (DAS) device.
