I am a knife collector and knife sharpener. Folks actually pay me to sharpen their knives. I had been using one of those smaller $100 microscopes that look similar to this one. I use it to get a super close up view of the knife edge so I can confirm the scratch pattern is what I want and that I have fully removed the burr. The burr is the little bit of left over metal on the edge of the blade after sharpening. So for my needs this microscope works perfectly fine. So what is different than this one from those cheaper models? Well the base is certainly better. More heavy duty. That is the same for the center pole. The microscope runs more smoothly up and down the pole as well. Now what about the part that matters the most, the actual microscope and the screen. It has slightly more magnification from 1200x to 2000x. However that's about it. The screen and in particular the picture quality is idential to my $120 one.So in the end what you need to decide is if the build quality of the upgraded hardware, like the base and the structural poles, along with the increased magnification is work the extra $150 - $200. For some folks it certainly might be! The smoothness of focusing and the steadiness of the entire setup might be exactly what you are looking for. For me that was important so the extra cost was worth it.

This digital microscope was easy to assemble and makes it easy to magnify electronic items.

This is my second digital video microscope and though it's at a higher price point than my first one ($320 at the time of this review) in my opinion the quality and extra features make it a good value. The main part of the unit is basically a big bright LCD screen with a camera attached. You get 3 different lenses of different magnifications that you can attach to the camera and then adjust the manual dial to move the lens up and down to get it in focus. I'm amazed at the range you have to work with on this thing. You can get super close up, like enough to see the hairs on an ant's leg, or you can be a little further out like to see the components on a circuit board. The screen can also record onto an SD card or even link to an external display using the included cables so you can stream what you're doing. This kit comes with everything you can possibly need. The microscope is mounted to a really nice tower assembly with adjustable arms that let you attach additional equipment (like extra lights or cameras). You get 2 really bright LED lights that do a great job of lighting up whatever opaque object you're looking at but if you want to look at transparent slides you also get a back-lit LED slide holder that lets you view the included sample slides (some of them are really cool!). The large base of the microscope is super stable and is covered with a blue silicone pad that is perfect for taking components apart or soldering.I'm very happy with this microscope and given its versatility and how well it works, I think it's a great value. I would definitely recommend this one.

A tool like this digital microscope used to be very expensive and was only available to professional repair people. I know that manufacturing costs have gone down but this unit is still on the expensive side for a tool that I will use sporadically at best. That being said, I'm so glad I was given the opportunity to order this device. Just to be clear, nobody should think that this is a real scientific microscope. These is a lens to view slides, and there's a slide stand, etc. but obviously if you're interested in real higher magnification, you're not looking for a multifunctional machine. The lens and attachments can be used to magnify some things that might be interesting like a hair follicle, or vegetation, or an insect, things that might be used for some home science lessons. The real benefit of this machine, in my opinion, is how it helps magnify and holds things in place so that it's easier to repair, or measure, or just observe them. For example, the helping hands will hold wires or electronic board parts while you work on them. The led lights light up the area so you can better see the object and the microscope enlarges the image so you can see what you're doing closer. I used this recently to remove a splinter in my finger that was difficult to see. My daughter is able to use this microscope to see her little stitches when she sews her sewing projects. There are tons of other things we can use this for as my wife and I get older and our eyes begin to adjust during aging. There are a couple of things I wish the manufacturers considered. The USB power cable is on the short side. Since the cable is attached to a switch, you can't just replace it with a longer cable, you have to use a USB extension cable or run an extension power cable to the machine. The power plug that powers the led lights is difficult to insert for some reason. It's a really thin small plug so I worry that over time it will bend or that the port itself will get damaged. A way to store all the accessories would have been nice to include with the kit. There are a lot of features that I haven't yet tested with this digital microscope so my review is a little limited for now but I expect that I'll find more and more useful ways to use it over time.

For the small footprint this thing takes up on my desk it’s the best tool I have besides my laptop.I don’t solder much but I do dabble in Coins and collectible cards. I got this mainly to help with grading! And it’s been a terrific help. I thankfully still have pretty good vision but this makes checking for imperfections much easier and quicker overall.I also have lots of trimmers and clippers I need to keep maintained and zero gapped. This helps with that too.I just keep finding useful things to do with this. And I love that it came with its own screen but also has the ability to be hooked up to another screen via usb or hdmi. As well as the changeable lens. So you don’t always have to fiddle with zoom as much.If I did do soldering I can only imagine how easy this would make it. For the price, which may seem a bit high at first, it’s well worth it.
