This is a cheap and cheerful bit of garden ornamentation. It doesn't scream quality, most of the parts are simply stamped out of sheet steel and everything is then powder coated in black. It's fairly easy to put together: there are just a couple of screws which need to be tightened once you've oriented the compass points. and then you screw the mounting plate to a wall, gable end, whatever. All the necessary fixings are supplied including black coated screws which I've used to mount it on the end of my shed: the screws to fix the compass points though are shiny steel - a bit of let down there but not a deal breaker.Once in place it looks fine. The directional mechanism isn't terribly sensitive though: it takes quite a bit of breeze to make it turn and even then it's a bit hit and miss. It's not intended to be a piece of real meteorological equipment though, just a bit of decoration. It works very well as that and I do like it.

Small, beautifully detailed cutting and rather thin steel sum this weather vane up. The matt black coating is very dark and even and the steel it covers measures just 1mm thick. I assume it's steel because my magnet attaches pretty strongly to it.The fixing bracket has three holes and attaches directly to the hollow 10mm pole leaving no flexibility in how it's mounted or clearance allowed to get past uneven wall or fence surfaces. The actual rooster-shaped vane is just 10 inches tall while the mounting pole is 14 inches from tip to the bottom of the bracket with an overlap when fitted of about an inch or so making for a total height of around 23 inches.The vane pivots on a ball end on the end of the hollow mounting pole so a dab of grease may be worth applying. There's no bearing used and the pivot is quite broad so may become stiffer as it ages.Ideal for a fence, a shed, a garage, a hen coop or a wall but if you mount it on the roof you'll probably need binoculars to read it. So long as it doesn't rust too quickly it's a nicely cut, nicely coated decorative wind vane at a very pocket-friendly price. Just choose your location carefully for maximum effect.
